Raven Feather on Snow

Alaska (yellow) cedar, acrylic paint

7-1/4 x 17 x 1-1/2 inches

2004

One night I came upon a large raven feather lying on the snow in bright moonlight.  This design evolved from that encounter.  I have included elements of the scene including the feather, the moonlight, the blue shadow the feather cast upon the snow and the “spirit” of a snowflake.

This piece is carved out of a piece of a flat-grained, yellow-cedar board left over from a friend’s newly built deck.  It is painted with artist’s acrylic paint.

I made this as a wedding gift for friends. This design is reminiscent of Robert Davidson’s contemporary Haida style.
