Raven Feather on Snow

Screen print on Arches cold press paper

10-3/4 x 3-1/2 inches

2006

One night, I came upon a large raven feather lying on the snow in bright moonlight. This design evolved from that encounter. I have included elements of the scene including the feather, the moonlight, the blue shadow the feather cast upon the snow and the “spirit” of a snowflake.

This is a hand cut, silkscreen print of my original design made by American Master Printer Christopher Nowicki in the studios of Alaska Indian Arts, Inc., in Haines, July 2006. It was issued in an edition of 116 prints on Arches handmade, 100% cotton, rag paper (sold out).

Mr. Nowicki is a printmaker preferred by many artists working in the Northwest Coast tradition for his understanding of formline design and his unsurpassed craftsmanship. He is Doctor of Printmaking at the Academy of Fine Art in Wroclaw, Poland, but travels every year to work with Native artists of the northwest coast.

This design is reminiscent of Robert Davidson’s contemporary Haida style.
